The Dark Moon in Capricorn connects us to the development of our personal relationships. The people we choose to surround ourselves with, or those we choose to avoid, can provide us with glimpses into our Shadow side.

Relationships can be challenging. Open and honest communication is vital in order to develop the support we may require on our healing path. Our Shadow may be triggered, leading us to project our fears and unintentionally hurting loved ones. Once we recognize the pattern, we can work with the other person to bring the Shadow into the light and heal past wounds. In this way, we may also take the relationship itself to a deeper level of intimacy.

Involving other people in our Shadow work requires compassion and empathy for everyone involved. Both individuals share in the healing process with sincerity and a deep desire to resolve the conflict without blame or shame. A healthy relationship, built on trust and honest communication,  provides the safe space required for intimate Shadow work.

 

The Dark Moon is a time for inner reflections, personal journeys and shadow work. What better time to take stock, to face our deepest fears, to meet and embrace our Shadow side. Communing with our dark self may lead to valuable personal insights. As we shine light on our darkness, we come to a place of healing. The Shadow self is the part of us that reacts from a place of unconscious fear. Once those fears are brought into the light, we can begin the process of healing.



Healing the Self Through Others

 

Seek out someone you love and trust. This person may be able to provide details about your Shadow side that you are not able to access. Be receptive to what is said, even if it makes you uncomfortable. Your loved one is not doing this to intentionally hurt you, when spoken from a place of compassion, what is shared becomes part of the healing process. Note recurring patterns, or situations when the Shadow is triggered. Together, discuss ways in which the Shadow can be acknowledged and accepted, and, when the Shadow rises up in the relationship, you can both confront it in order to attain an even deeper level of healing.

Yule 2017

 

Yule comes from the Norse “iul” and the Anglo-Saxon “hweol”, both meaning “wheel”. It celebrates the completion of another cycle in the Wheel of the Year. The dark half of the year is at an end and we gather together to honour the light’s return.

The Yuletide season begins on the eve of the Winter Solstice, and continues into the New Year. As the sun makes its way back to Earth, and the days become noticeably longer, we experience a sense of rebirth and renewal. Hope is awakened once again, and we celebrate, by gathering with family and friends, and by sharing our joy in this season of giving.

One of the traditional symbols of the season is the Yule Wreath. The circular wreath, having no beginning and no ending, is symbolic of the eternal cycle of life-death-rebirth. Yule wreaths are usually made from evergreen boughs, whose branches remain green throughout the Winter months. They are symbols of immortality and the victory over darkness and challenge.

 

 

Yule Wreath Tarot Spread

 

Yule is an ideal time for introspection, divination and magickal workings, and planning for the future. The Yule Wreath tarot spread follows the twelve-spoked Wheel of the Year, each day marked as one of the twelve days of Yule. The thirteenth card, at the center, represents the coming year. Beginning on Yule Eve, draw one card from your tarot deck and lay it on the appropriate spoke of the wheel. Reflect on its meaning and make a note of its position in the spread. Once you have completed your Wreath spread, reflect on the overall meaning of the cards, as a whole, and write down your thoughts. Notice any trends that are likely to arise in the coming year.

Dark Moon in Sagittarius 2017

 

The Dark Moon in Sagittarius connects us to our sense of adventure. We become the explorer, seeking out the hidden wonders of our inner landscape.

This close to Winter Solstice, it truly is the darkest time of the year. With no Moonlight to guide the way on our journey, we may feel lost and utterly alone.

But if we dare to put our trust in the darkness and travel unknown pathways, we will discover something very precious. There is gold in the shadow, gold which needs to be mined and brought to the surface. Robert Johnson and Murray Stein refer to this as the Golden Shadow.

There is only one thing many of us fear more than the dark, and that is our own light, our personal power. The light becomes an aspect of shadow precisely because we have so much resistance to it.

The Golden Shadow is related to our higher calling, yet, we may often resist this calling, we deny it, we run from it, we fear it. To honour our life’s purpose is to hold ourselves accountable and to take responsibility for how we act in the world. We do this by embracing the Golden Shadow, by living the life we are meant to be living.

 

Ritual to Mine the Shadows for Gold

 

Sit quietly with pen and paper. Think about the bright parts of yourself that you have been keeping hidden in the Shadows.

If you aren’t sure how to start, think about the people, real or fictional, whom you admire and look up to as role models.

Write down the traits that attract you, the characteristics which resonate with you. You feel strongly because you recognize those traits, they are the flecks of gold hiding in your Shadow. Dig them up and show those beautiful golden nuggets to the world.

Dark Moon in Scorpio 2017

 

The Dark Moon in Scorpio connects us with our deepest emotional experiences in such a way that we can begin the healing process. We may feel an intensity of emotions that can take us to the depths of sorrow, crippling fear, or excessive anger. We have choices available to us on how to manage these extremes. We can lash out at others, railing at the injustices imposed upon us. We can curl up into a fetal position on the floor, ignoring it all until it goes away. We can beat ourselves up, feeling like a failure. Or we can choose to direct it inward, to empower the self in order to do the work of seeking out Shadow, naming it, and releasing it.

The Dark Moon in Scorpio is an excellent time to resolve difficult issues, providing us with an opportunity for emotional healing. In this way, we are able to cleanse and purify as we prepare for the inner work that will be done in the Winter months ahead. Emotional healing and transformation occur when we are able to face, acknowledge and embrace the Shadow parts of ourselves. Sometimes, it takes a crisis for us to come to the realization that something needs to change.

Emotions may become intense, and so we must try to avoid the automatic reaction of stuffing them down, ignoring them, or rationalizing them. It may be that decades of avoidance have led to this build up, and so, now we must experience them fully and completely before we can heal the wounds. This does not mean we have to feel it all at once, we can keep it manageable, a little at a time, or revisit the issue over several days, as often as needed. We can be gentle with ourselves, even as we stay firm in our decision to heal the scars of emotional wounding.

How do we do this? By stepping back and looking honestly at the trigger, when did it first emerge? Why did it occur? Often, the onset of a behaviour arose as a way to protect us, but over time, it became an unconscious reaction whenever we felt the emotional helplessness of that initial incident. The reaction no longer serves its purpose, and may actually prevent us from healing and moving forward.

 

The Dark Moon is a time for inner reflections, personal journeys and shadow work. What better time to take stock, to face our deepest fears, to meet and embrace our Shadow side. Communing with our dark self may lead to valuable personal insights. As we shine light on our darkness, we come to a place of healing. The Shadow self is the part of us that reacts from a place of unconscious fear. Once those fears are brought into the light, we can begin the process of healing.

 

Ritual – Naming the Shadow

 

Ideally, this ritual is done in a darkened room, with one candle lit.

Begin by casting a circle, in a manner that is comfortable for you. By creating a sacred space, you choose who to invite in, you may wish to call on Guides and Guardians, Deities, Angels, Elementals… to act as protectors or to witness your ritual.

Take several cleansing breaths, letting go of the events of the day

Sit before your candle and look into the flames, with every breath, you find yourself going deeper and deeper into yourself.

Think about an event, either a recent one or one from your past. Notice where in your body you feel the emotional reaction. Think back to when you may have first experienced this reaction. Name the behaviour, is it projecting onto others, is it denial, is it putting yourself down? Think about the ways this behaviour has had an impact on you, does it serve you to continue? Once we name a part of our Shadow self, and bring it to consciousness, we can begin a dialogue, expressing how we feel about this behaviour.

Dialogue isn’t about blaming or shaming, it is merely expression, a release of pent-up emotions, emotions that have been held onto for far too long. Remember, your circle is your safe space, tell your Shadow why you feel the way you do, don’t analyze the emotional experience, sit with it, allow the release to occur, don’t rein it in. Try to understand it without becoming attached or reliving the crisis

Visualize the intense emotions as a ball of energy, looming over you, casting a large and oppressive shadow. Place all your fear, your anger, sadness, or any other emotion that threatens to overwhelm you, or that makes you uncomfortable. Yell, scream, cry, anything that gets the energy out of you and into this ball. Once you have filled your energy ball with all that has been within you, send it into the Earth, ask the Mother to take it from you. Ask her to transform it into compost, to nourish Her. Then, and this is key, let it go, completely, don’t hold onto any of it, feel the weight lifting off of you,

Once this Shadow ball has disappeared into the Earth, visualize a second ball, one of light, and into it cast your hopes and dreams, the new and healthier ways you will respond to situations that you once reacted to unconsciously, fill it with healing energy, healing your soul, your emotional woundings, and your heart that has so recently unleashed so much. Draw this ball of light into yourself, feel the lightness, feel yourself glowing more brightly as the Shadow fades.

Feel the love of self in your heart, permeating through your entire being. Visualize this ball of light, emanating from your heart, and send it deep into the Earth, with thanks and gratitude to the Mother.

Give thanks to those who have stood as witnesses and protectors and open your circle.

Be gentle with yourself after an intense emotional release. Do what you require for self-care.

Samhain 2017

Samhain is a time for personal reflection and communing with the ancestors. We look to the past, so that we may be better prepared for the future.

At Samhain, the Goddess has entered her incarnation as Crone. She is Grandmother, Ancient Goddess, the Wise One we turn to for advice. Crone has many names: Baba Yaga, Cailleach, Grandmother Spider, Hekate, Morrígan, Mother Holle, Cerridwen.

She is transition and transformation, acting as a bridge between the end of one cycle and the beginning of a new one. We can work with Crone to assist us in transitioning from one life to the next, or from one realm to another.

Crone is associated with night and darkness, the unconscious realms and shadow work, the underworld, healing, transformation and regeneration.

Crone listens with Her inner ear and sees with Her inner eye, and so She is able to access Her powers of divination and prophecy. If we are receptive to Her gifts, She will share Her knowledge with us, the wisdom of the ages.

On this Samhain eve, Her Sacred Magick is at its most potent.

Scrying Mirror

 

In a darkened room, cast a circle and call on your guardians of protection. Invite Crone into your circle to assist you in your ritual.

Use a blackened mirror, or fill a dark-coloured bowl/cauldron with water to act as a mirror. Light one small candle and place it  behind your mirror. You only need enough light to see, you do not want its reflection to impede your gaze. Repeat the poem above, chant the names of the Crone, or meditate on a question. Continue doing this until your mind is focused.

Cast away all doubts. If you set an intent to see images, it will happen.

Gaze into the darkness of the mirror rather than focusing on the surface.

Do not blink your eyes more than is necessary. Too much blinking breaks concentration, but staring too hard can cause eye strain.

Do not let your gaze wander from the mirror. If you are experiencing some difficulty, try to visualize the blackness as infinite space and project your gaze several feet into the blackness.

It may take some practice to achieve results but it is worth the effort. If this is your first scrying, you may wish to limit your time to 15 minute intervals, until you get results. Make a note of any images or symbols that arise, but do not try to analyze them immediately.

Scrying is a valuable tool to connect us with the inner workings of our subconscious, a way to commune with our ancestors, and to see how the year ahead will unfold.

Dark Moon in Libra 2017

The Dark Moon in Libra is a time for honest and open communication with ourselves. Honest communication goes beyond words, it includes active listening and an open heart. It is about expressing emotions and thoughts, without judgment or blame.

It can be uncomfortable to listen honestly to what we say and to look honestly at how we act. There may be a tendency to block out “negatives” or what the ego perceives as criticism. We can be our own worst critic, beating ourselves down at every turn. Or we may project onto someone else, avoiding responsibility and personal accountability.  We may take on the role of enabler, rationalizing our self-righteous indignation, making excuses, or we may live in denial.

The Dark Moon is a time for inner reflections, personal journeys and shadow work. What better time to take stock, to face our deepest fears, to meet and embrace our shadow side. Communing with our dark self may lead to valuable personal insights. As we shine light on our darkness, we come to a place of healing. The Shadow self is the part of us that reacts from a place of unconscious fear. Once those fears are brought into the light, we can begin the process of healing.

This Dark Moon coincides with Lunar Samhain, a time of endings and beginnings. In some Pagan traditions, Samhain marks the new year, it is a time of contemplation, communing with the ancestors and reflecting on the year just past. It is an opportunity to let go of what no longer holds true for us, creating space for transformation. We can use the Dark Moon to commune with our shadow self, to have an open and honest discussion about how we live and act in the world, and to ask what it is that we need to let go of in order to bring about healing and transformation.

Begin by casting a circle, in a manner that is comfortable for you. By creating a sacred space, you choose who to invite in, you may wish to call on Guides and Guardians, Deities, Angels, Elementals… to act as protectors or to witness your ritual.

Sit before your candle and look into the flames, with every breath, you find yourself going deeper and deeper into yourself.

Close your eyes and visualize yourself stepping into darkness, feel the earth beneath your feet, the wind caressing you, whispers in the trees, you are safe and protected.

You find yourself in a forest grove, the weak, flickering light of a lone candle causes the shadows to dance around you. You may feel fear, a need to run and hide, but instead you remain, determined to meet your Shadow. You sense that you are being watched, and, looking up, you see a pair of glowing eyes, you are facing your Shadow self. You swallow your fear and invite her into the circle of dim light.

As she approaches, you see that she is you, yet somehow different, menacing or threatening perhaps. Notice where in your body you feel discomfort, a tension in the jaw or shoulders, a queasy sensation in the pit of your stomach, anxiety or panic. Breathe through these sensations, for they are telling you that you are on the right path.

Together, reflect on events where your shadow self was triggered and ask the following questions:

What happened?

How did my shadow self react?

How did I feel about her actions?

How does she affect me now?

What kind of control does she have over me?

How does she serve me?

Do I need to make changes and, if so, how do I go about it?

 

As you explore these questions together, bringing unconscious behaviours to light, you noticed the candle flame growing brighter and brighter.

When you are ready, embrace your Shadow self and give thanks for what she has taught you this night.

Walk out from the forest and slowly come back into your body.

Give thanks to those who have stood as witnesses and protectors and open your circle.

Lammas

 

Lammas, celebrated on August 1,  comes from the Saxon hlaef-mass (loaf-mass) and marks the first wheat harvest of the year. Grain, planted in the spring has been empowered by the sun and is now ready for gathering. The cycle of life is renewed as seed collected in the harvest is stored away for planting in the spring.

These days, many of us may feel disconnected from this natural cycle of life-death-rebirth. We’ve traded in quality for convenience, our daily bread awaits us, already baked and wrapped in plastic, sitting on the shelf at the local supermarket. Agriculture has become big business, complete with mass-production, pesticides and genetically-modified single-use seeds.

Lammas is a reminder that we are all in this together. Our lives are entwined with Mother Nature. We honour the Goddess and the abundance of nature by planting organic gardens or buying from local farmers. Living a more sustainable life is healthy not only for us, but for the planet as well.

Lammas is an opportunity to come back into alignment with nature. We do this through conscious living and making choices that will benefit Mother Earth. And, in return, She will provide the sustenance and nurturing we require to continue living a life of abundance and joy.
